Steer Clear of These Plumbing Myths

It can be easy to fall for plumbing myths, especially with all the DIY blogs and lifehack videos out there. With such an abundance of information, it can be hard to filter the good from the bad and know which is misinformation.

Unfortunately, some plumbing myths can cause serious damage and end up costing you a fortune in repairs that could have been saved if you reached out to a professional first.

Our plumbers at Best Home Services have put together some of the most common plumbing myths that you should steer clear of. Let’s go!

Myth #1: Flushable Wipes Are Flushable

Believe it or not, despite being called “flushable wipes” most of them are NOT biodegradable and the fibers from these wipes can get stuck in your pipes causing serious damage. They may go down, but since they are unable to disintegrate properly, they will easily clog deeper into the sewer or septic system.

It is best to place the wipes in the trash after being used.

Myth #2: Lemon Peels Can Be Used in Your Sink

Chances are you have probably heard that you can use lemon peels or orange peels to freshen up your sink or you have heard they can be used to loosen up grease clogs.

As it turns out, citric acid can damage the blades of your garbage disposal and cause them to corrode. On top of that, the peels themselves are unable to efficiently breakdown, making it likely for them to clog your disposal as well.

Myth #3: You Can Fix Most Plumbing Issues Yourself

Plumbing is one of the most important parts of any home. Unfortunately, many homeowners attempt to fix plumbing issues on their own. Before attempting a DIY solution, it’s important to understand that you can’t fix most plumbing problems yourself.

When it comes to plumbing repairs or installations, leaving them in the hands of
an experienced professional is always recommended.

For example, while some minor clogs and leaks can be resolved with the right tools and supplies, more serious plumbing troubles should be left to professional plumbers. Attempting to repair complex sewer lines could lead to hazardous conditions if done incorrectly.

Myth #4: Chemical Drain Cleaners Work and are Safe

You would think that drain cleaners are safe to use and effective since they are sold in stores but it turns out they are actually quite dangerous. These chemicals can cause damage to your lungs from breathing them in and can cause a huge health and safety risk to you and your family.

The damage doesn’t stop there, these harsh ingredients can also cause your pipes to deteriorate especially if you use them often. And you’ll find yourself running back to the store for more as they don’t properly clean out your drains as advertised.

Myth #5: Putting a Brick in Your Toilet Tank Can Save You Money

If you’ve never heard this one before it may sound a little funny, however, this belief is quite common! It is believed that putting a brick in the tank of your toilet can save you money by forcing your toilet to use less water each time you flush.

Not only does your tank require a specific amount of water to properly flush, but the brick can break down and cause issues in your toilet.

Myth #6: Any Plumber Can Fix Your Plumbing Issues

You may believe that all plumbers are the same and that any plumbing service you call can provide you with what you need. Unfortunately, that’s not true! Homeowners need to call a licensed professional who is experienced in handling all types of plumbing problems.

A good rule of thumb is to choose a plumbing company that has at least 5 years
of experience working specifically on residential plumbing systems.

Licensed professionals will have current knowledge of new technologies and best practices when it comes to diagnosis and repair of your issue.
