Ways To Save On Your Electric Bill

Keep Your Comfort Up and Costs Down.

Spring has sprung in Southwest Florida and along with the rising temperatures are rising utility bills. Did you know there are a few simple ways to save on your cooling bills this spring and summer so you can stay comfortable without breaking the bank? We recommend keeping these simple tips in mind to keep your energy bills manageable throughout our tropical spring and summer months.

Ceiling Fans

Ensure your ceiling fans are on while you’re in the room and spinning the right way. Even when you’re running your air conditioner, turning on your ceiling fans will help conserve energy. Ceiling fans help to circulate the air and keep you cool without adding more strain on your AC. During spring and summer, ceiling fans need to be rotating in a counter-clockwise direction to properly circulate cool air and create a comfortable breeze. However, it is important to remember that ceiling fans cool people- not rooms. So, make sure you shut off your ceiling fans when you leave the room so you aren’t wasting energy.

Household Chores

Make sure you time your chores properly. If you run the dryer or cook a meal in the oven during the hottest hours of the afternoon, your air conditioner is going to have to work harder to keep your home cool. If possible, perform chores that generate heat during cooler times of day, such as early in the morning or later in the evening. You can also cut down on the heat generated inside your home by preparing meals outside on the grill or hanging your clothes outside to dry rather than using the dryer. Use cold water in the washing machine instead of hot water; This will cut down on the amount of heat generated as well. If you use your dishwasher, set it to air dry your dishes instead of heat dry them. This not only keeps your home cooler, but it also saves on energy costs since the dishwasher will not be running as long.

Energy Efficiency

One of the easiest ways to make your home more energy efficient is to put up curtains that block out the light and heat from the sun- and keep them closed during the day. These curtains come in many stylish designs that will fit any decor- and they’re affordable! You can also improve your home’s energy efficiency by replacing old windows with newer, Energy Star qualified windows. If you see gaps around your doors and windows, seal them to keep cool air inside your home and hot air out.

AC System Maintenance

A simple phone call to schedule an inspection from a professional HVAC technician can save you a significant amount of money on your cooling bills. During an inspection, the technician will fully inspect your air conditioner and look for air leaks and clogged ducts throughout your home. In addition to improving the efficiency of your HVAC system and lowering your bills, this simple task could even extend the life of your entire cooling system. Regular maintenance will extend the life of your system and improve your air quality and comfort for years to come.
