Learn How To Properly Care For Your AC

Few things are worse than an air conditioner that isn’t blowing cold air on a hot summer day. Do you know what to do when your a/c isn’t working? Here are a few tips from your Naples air conditioner experts.

Clean Your Condenser

Whether you have a heat pump or a split system, all air conditioners cool the air in your home using a similar method. Warm air is pulled in from outside your home by the condenser, and your air conditioner extracts the heat from it. The cooled air is then circulated throughout your home.

If your air conditioner is blowing warm or hot air, the most likely cause is a dirty condenser. The condenser is the part of your air conditioning system that sits outside, so it is prone to becoming dirty as the result of dust, dirt and other debris.

How To Clean An Air Conditioner Condenser

First, and most importantly, turn off all power to your air conditioner. If you aren’t sure of how to do this, do not attempt to clean the condenser yourself. Once the power is off, remove the top panel and any side panels from the condenser, being careful not to disturb any wires.

Using a soft brush, clean the fins and coils to remove dust and debris. Be careful not to bend the fins. If possible, remove loose debris using a vacuum with a brush attachment.

Using a large garbage bag or piece of plastic and duct tape, completely cover the motor and wiring. Clean the coils using a hose with a sprayer attachment. Do not use a high-pressure stream as this could bend the fins.

Once all the water has drained out of the unit, remove the plastic and duct tape, and replace the protective grills. Use a level to make sure the unit is balanced properly, and rebalance, if necessary.

Finally, turn off the thermostat, and reconnect the power to the air conditioner. Once the power has been restored, set the thermostat to cool.

If Cleaning The Condenser Doesn’t Help, Call A Pro

If cleaning the condenser does not solve your problem, the refrigerant in your air conditioner likely needs to be recharged. Recharging an air conditioner can be dangerous, so this is a job that needs to be left to the professionals.
